피에트렐치나의 성 비오 사제 기념일 강론

요즘 저는 아주 바쁘게 지내고 있습니다.

제가 사목하고 있는 한인 공동체의 25주년을 준비하고 있고, 동시에 대학원에서 수업을 들으며 공부하고 있습니다.

분명히 목표가 있고, 그 목표를 향해 계속 앞으로 나아가고 있습니다.

그런데 가끔 제 자신에게 묻게 됩니다.

“나는 정말 제대로 가고 있는 걸까?”

계속 걷고는 있는데, 때로는 이 길의 끝이 보이지 않습니다.

아마 우리 모두에게도 이런 순간이 있을 것입니다.

우리는 기도합니다.

열심히 일합니다.

최선을 다합니다.

하지만 언제 그 결과를 보게 될지는 알지 못합니다.

오늘 우리가 기억하는 성 비오 신부님도 아주 힘든 길을 걸으셨습니다.

우리는 비오 신부님께서 오랜 세월 그리스도의 상처인 오상을 몸에 지니고 사셨다는 것을 알고 있습니다.

저는 가끔 그것을 생각해 봅니다.

손가락에 작은 가시 하나만 박혀도 얼마나 아픕니까.

그런데 그리스도의 상처를 손과 발에 지니고 살아간다는 것은 얼마나 큰 고통이었을까요?

비오 신부님은 육체적인 고통만 겪은 것이 아닙니다. 교회의 조사와 여러 제한도 겪으셨습니다.

그런데 그런 분이 우리에게 이런 말씀을 남겼습니다.

> “기도하고, 희망하며, 걱정하지 마십시오.

걱정은 아무런 도움이 되지 않습니다.

하느님은 자비하시며 여러분의 기도를 들어주실 것입니다.”

저는 이 말씀이 참 큰 위로가 됩니다.

비오 신부님은 자신의 삶이 편안했기 때문에 이런 말씀을 하신 것이 아닙니다.

아마 그분이 “걱정하지 마십시오”라고 말씀하신 것은

“모든 일이 내가 원하는 대로 잘될 것입니다”라는 뜻은 아니었을 것입니다.

오히려 이런 뜻이 아니었을까 생각합니다.

결과를 알지 못하더라도 하느님을 신뢰하면서 오늘 하루를 충실하게 살아가십시오.

그리고 이것은 오늘 독서와 복음의 말씀과도 참 아름답게 연결됩니다.

오늘 잠언에서 우리는 이런 기도를 듣습니다.

“저를 가난하게도, 부유하게도 하지 마시고

저에게 필요한 양식만 허락해 주십시오.”

그리고 복음에서 예수님께서는 열두 제자를 파견하십니다.

예수님께서는 길을 떠날 때 아무것도 가지고 가지 말라고 하십니다.

지팡이도, 여행 보따리도, 빵도, 돈도 가지고 가지 말라고 하십니다.

왜 그러셨을까요?

어쩌면 예수님께서는 제자들에게 길을 떠나기 전에 모든 것을 갖출 필요는 없다는 것을 가르쳐 주시는 것 같습니다.

앞으로 어떤 일이 일어날지 모두 알 필요도 없습니다.

모든 것을 준비해 놓을 필요도 없습니다.

내가 모든 것을 통제할 필요도 없습니다.

그저 예수님과 함께 길을 떠나는 것입니다.

어쩌면 우리의 신앙생활도 마찬가지일 것입니다.

우리는 길 전체를 볼 필요가 없습니다.

모든 답을 가지고 있을 필요도 없습니다.

오늘 우리에게 필요한 양식을 받고,

오늘 하느님께서 맡겨주신 일을 하고,

내일이 오면 다시 한번 하느님을 신뢰하는 것입니다.

그래서 오늘 저는 비오 신부님의 말씀을 조금 더 깊이 이해하게 됩니다.

기도하십시오.

희망하십시오.

그리고 걱정하지 마십시오.

길의 끝이 보이지 않을 때, 기도하십시오.

결과가 보이지 않을 때, 희망하십시오.

그리고 오늘 하루에 필요한 것만 가지고 걸어가십시오.

왜냐하면 우리는 혼자 걷고 있지 않기 때문입니다.

우리는 예수님과 함께 걷고 있습니다.

그리고 어쩌면 이것이 오늘 복음이 우리에게 가르쳐 주는 것인지도 모릅니다.

우리에게 모든 것이 필요한 것은 아닙니다.

예수님께서 우리와 함께 계신다면,

우리는 이미 이 길을 걸어가는 데 필요한 것을 가지고 있습니다.

Homily – Memorial of St. Pio of Pietrelcina

These days, I have been very busy.

I am preparing for the 25th anniversary of the Korean Catholic community where I serve, and at the same time, I am taking graduate classes at the university.

I have goals, and I keep moving forward.

But sometimes I ask myself:

“Am I really going in the right direction?”

I keep walking, but sometimes I cannot see the end of the road.

Maybe we all have moments like this.

We pray.

We work hard.

We try our best.

But we do not know when we will see the result.

Saint Padre Pio, whom we remember today, also walked a very difficult road.

We know that he carried the wounds of Christ, the stigmata, on his body for many years.

Sometimes I think about that.

Even a tiny thorn in my finger hurts so much.

How painful must it have been to carry the wounds of Christ in his hands and feet?

And Padre Pio experienced not only physical suffering. He also went through investigations and restrictions from the Church.

And yet, this man said:

> “Pray, hope, and don’t worry.

Worry is useless.

God is merciful and will hear your prayer.”

These words give me great comfort.

Padre Pio did not say this because his life was easy.

Perhaps when he said, “Don’t worry,” he did not mean, “Everything will happen exactly as you want.”

I think he meant:

Even when you do not know the result, trust God and live faithfully today.

And this connects beautifully with today’s readings.

In the first reading from Proverbs, we hear this prayer:

“Give me neither poverty nor riches;

provide me only with the food I need.”

And in the Gospel, Jesus sends the Twelve on their mission.

He tells them to take nothing for the journey—no walking stick, no sack, no food, no money.

Why?

Maybe Jesus is teaching them that they do not need to have everything before they begin their journey.

They do not need to know everything that will happen.

They do not need to have everything under control.

They simply go with Jesus.

Maybe our life of faith is the same.

We do not need to see the whole road.

We do not need to have all the answers.

We receive the bread we need for today.

We do the work God gives us today.

And tomorrow, we trust God again.

So today, I understand Padre Pio’s words a little more deeply:

Pray.

Hope.

And don’t worry.

When you cannot see the end of the road, pray.

When you cannot see the result, hope.

And take only what you need for today.

Because we do not walk alone.

We walk with Jesus.

And in the end, perhaps that is what today’s Gospel is teaching us:

We do not need to carry everything with us.

If we have Jesus,

we already have what we need for the journey.
