When I was a student, I often came home late at night after studying.
Whenever I came home late, my mother was still awake, waiting for me.
Sometimes, she was holding her rosary and praying for me.
Sometimes, she was so tired that she fell asleep while praying.
But strangely, instead of being thankful, I sometimes became annoyed.
I would say to her,
“Mom, please don’t wait for me. Just go to sleep.”
Now, when I think about it, I realize how thankful I should have been.
My mother could have gone to bed early.
She could have rested after a long day.
But because she loved her son, she stayed awake.
She waited for me and prayed for me.
I think love is often like this.
Because we love someone,
we wait a little longer,
we rest a little less,
and sometimes we sacrifice ourselves for the person we love.
As I grew older, I began to understand my mother’s love.
And strangely, the more I understood her love, the more sorry I felt.
Why couldn’t I be more thankful?
Why couldn’t I speak more kindly to her?
Why did I take her love for granted?
So sometimes I think:
When we truly love, we become more aware that we are sinners.
Not because love makes us sin more.
But because the more we understand true love,
the more we realize how much we have failed to love.
My mother’s love teaches me this.
Today, Saint Paul says:
“I am the least of the apostles,
not fit to be called an apostle,
because I persecuted the Church of God.”
Paul remembered who he had been.
But he did not stop there.
He continued:
“But by the grace of God I am what I am.”
Paul could speak so beautifully about love because he first experienced the love of Christ.
He knew his sins.
But he also knew something greater than his sins:
the love and mercy of Jesus Christ.
The sinful woman in today’s Gospel experienced the same thing.
She washed the feet of Jesus with her tears, wiped them with her hair, and anointed them with oil.
Jesus said that she showed great love because she had been greatly forgiven.
Paul and this woman did not love Jesus because they were perfect.
They loved Jesus because they knew how much they had been forgiven and how deeply they had been loved.
Maybe this is also true for us.
Before we ask,
“How much do I love God?”
perhaps we should first ask,
“How much has God loved me?”
When I was young, I did not understand my mother waiting for me with the rosary in her hands.
Only later did I understand:
That was love.
And when we look at the Cross, perhaps we discover the same thing:
“Jesus loved me this much.”
Then, like Saint Paul, we can say:
“By the grace of God I am what I am.”
We are sorry because we have not loved enough.
But because we have been loved so much,
we can begin to love again.
