Last week, I went to a priests’ convocation.
It was actually my first time attending one since I came to the United States three years ago.
At first, I felt a little awkward.
We came from different countries.
We spoke different languages.
We grew up in different cultures.
But after spending a day together, something changed.
We prayed together.
We ate together.
We talked and listened to one another.
And soon, I realized that we were not so different after all.
Each priest was someone’s son.
Each of us had someone we missed.
Each of us had our own struggles and worries.
And most importantly, we had one thing in common:
We became priests because we love the Lord.
Today, Saint Paul speaks to us about love.
He says:
“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
When I was young, I thought love was something very passionate.
You meet someone you love.
You want to be with that person.
And you want that person to think and feel the same way you do.
In some ways, I thought love meant becoming one by making the other person like me.
But as I grow older, I realize that real love is much more difficult.
Love also needs training.
Love is not changing another person according to my wishes.
Sometimes love means waiting.
Sometimes love means staying beside someone, even when I cannot solve their problem.
And I think this is what Our Lady of Sorrows teaches us.
Mary stood beneath the Cross.
She could not take away the Cross from her Son.
She could not take away His suffering.
But she did one very important thing:
She did not leave Him.
She simply stood beside Him.
And I think that is one of the deepest forms of love.
Sisters, I think your vocation often shows this kind of love as well.
Love does not always mean standing in front and doing something great.
Sometimes love means quietly standing beside someone.
Sometimes it means supporting someone from behind.
Sometimes it means taking care of someone when nobody notices.
So today, I pray that we may practice this kind of love.
Even when we cannot solve someone’s problems,
may we remain beside them.
And when someone is tired and looks behind them,
may they find us there, saying:
“It’s okay. I’m here with you.”
Perhaps this is what love really means:
to remain beside someone, even when we cannot take away their cross.
