저는 산책하는 것을 좋아합니다.

그리고 뉴올리언스에 살면서 새롭게 좋아하게 된 것이 하나 있습니다. 바로 하늘과 구름을 바라보는 것입니다.

제가 살던 한국의 지역은 산으로 둘러싸여 있습니다. 그래서인지 예전에는 구름이 이렇게 아름다운지 잘 몰랐습니다. 그런데 뉴올리언스는 산이 거의 없는 평지라서 하늘이 아주 넓게 보입니다.

산책하면서 하늘을 바라보면 매일매일 모습이 다릅니다.

어떤 날은 흰 구름이 가득하고, 어떤 날은 짙은 구름이 몰려오고, 또 어떤 날은 아무것도 없는 파란 하늘이 펼쳐집니다.

모두 다르지만 참 조화롭습니다.

저는 그 모습을 보면서 하느님을 느낍니다.

하느님께서 만드신 세상은 똑같아서 아름다운 것이 아니라, 서로 다른 것들이 조화를 이루기 때문에 아름답습니다.

사람도 마찬가지입니다.

우리의 생김새도 다르고, 목소리도 다르고, 성격도 다르고, 좋아하는 것도 다릅니다. 하느님께서는 우리를 똑같이 만들지 않으셨습니다. 서로 다르게 창조하셨습니다.

그러나 그 다름 속에서 서로를 받아들이고 조화롭게 살아가는 것, 그것이 하느님의 뜻이라고 생각합니다.

그래서 수녀님들을 보면 참 신기합니다.

서로 다른 곳에서 태어나고, 성격도 다르고, 살아온 삶도 다른데 한 공동체 안에서 함께 기도하고, 함께 식사하고, 함께 일하며 살아가십니다.

어쩌면 수녀님들은 이미 매일 ‘다름 속의 조화’를 살아가고 계신 것 같습니다.

오늘 독서를 읽으면서 저는 코린토 교회를 떠올려 봅니다.

코린토 교회에도 다양한 사람들이 있었습니다. 문제는 사람들이 자신의 다름을 자랑하기 시작했다는 것입니다.

“나는 바오로 편이다.”

“나는 아폴로 편이다.”

“나는 케파 편이다.”

그래서 바오로 사도는 말합니다.

«“여러분 가운데에 분열이 없게 하십시오. 오히려 같은 생각과 같은 뜻으로 하나가 되십시오.”

(1코린 1,10)»

그리고 바오로는 묻습니다.

«“그리스도께서 갈라지셨다는 말입니까? 바오로가 여러분을 위하여 십자가에 못 박히기라도 하였습니까?”

(1코린 1,13)»

쉽게 말하면 이런 말인 것 같습니다.

“여러분, 제발 조화롭게 삽시다.

누구에게 세례를 받았는지가 그렇게 중요합니까?

누가 더 뛰어난 은사를 받았는지가 그렇게 중요합니까?

우리는 모두 그리스도 안에서 한 형제자매 아닙니까?”

코린토 교회의 또 다른 문제는 은사였습니다.

누군가는 자신이 특별한 은사를 받았다고 생각하고 그것을 자랑했습니다. 그러나 바오로 사도는 은사는 나를 자랑하기 위한 것이 아니라 공동체를 위해 주어진 것이라고 가르칩니다.

«“각 사람에게 공동선을 위하여 성령의 활동이 드러나는 것입니다.”

(1코린 12,7)»

그래서 바오로는 방언을 말하는 것보다 그것을 해석하여 공동체가 알아들을 수 있게 하는 것을 더 중요하게 이야기합니다.

«“예언하는 이는 방언을 말하는 이보다 더 훌륭합니다. 다만 교회가 성장하도록 누가 방언을 해석해 준다면 그렇지 않습니다.”

(1코린 14,5)»

기준은 단순합니다.

내가 얼마나 특별한가가 아니라, 내가 받은 것이 다른 사람에게 얼마나 도움이 되는가입니다.

그리고 바오로는 아주 아름다운 비유를 들려줍니다.

«“몸은 한 지체가 아니라 많은 지체로 되어 있습니다.”

(1코린 12,14)»

눈이 손에게 “나는 네가 필요 없다.”고 할 수 없고, 머리가 발에게 “나는 네가 필요 없다.”고 할 수 없습니다. 서로 다르지만 모두 한 몸을 이루기 때문입니다.

하늘도 그런 것 같습니다.

구름이 있고, 햇빛이 있고, 비가 있고, 달이 있습니다.

서로 전혀 다르지만 함께 있을 때 아름다운 하늘을 만듭니다.

우리도 그렇습니다.

자, 하느님의 자녀 여러분.

우리는 하느님의 해이며, 구름이며, 비이며, 달입니다.

모두 똑같을 필요는 없습니다.

하느님께서 우리를 다르게 만드셨기 때문입니다.

다만 한 가지를 기억하면 좋겠습니다.

«“여러분은 그리스도의 몸이고 한 사람 한 사람이 그 지체입니다.”

(1코린 12,27)»

그러니 서로의 다름을 경쟁하지 말고,

서로의 은사를 비교하지 말고,

서로에게 필요한 사람이 되어 줍시다.

그리고 오늘도 하느님께서 만들어 주신 저 아름다운 하늘처럼,서로 다르지만 함께 있을 때 더 아름다운 공동체를 이루며 기쁘게 살아갑시다.

I enjoy taking walks.

And since coming to New Orleans, there is something I have come to appreciate in a new way: the sky and the clouds.

The place where I lived in Korea is surrounded by mountains. Maybe because of that, I never realized how beautiful clouds could be.

But here in New Orleans, there are almost no mountains. The land is flat, and the sky seems so wide and open.

When I take a walk and look up at the sky, it is different every day.

Some days there are beautiful white clouds.

Some days the clouds are dark and heavy.

And on other days, there is nothing but a clear blue sky.

Every day is different, but somehow, everything is in harmony.

When I look at the beauty and harmony of nature, I feel the presence of God.

God’s creation is beautiful not because everything is the same, but because so many different things exist together in harmony.

I think the same is true of us.

We look different.

Our voices are different.

Our personalities are different.

Our interests and preferences are different.

God did not create us all the same. He created each of us differently.

But I believe that God desires us to accept those differences and live together in harmony.

And when I look at you, Sisters, I think you are already living this way.

You were born in different places. You have different personalities and different life experiences. Yet you live together in one community. You pray together, eat together, work together, and serve together.

In a beautiful way, religious community life is a daily experience of harmony in diversity.

Today’s reading makes me think of the Church in Corinth.

The Christians in Corinth were also very different from one another. But their differences began to become a source of pride and division.

Some said,

“I belong to Paul.”

Others said, “I belong to Apollos.”

Others said, “I belong to Cephas.”

So Paul tells them:

«“There be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose.”

(1 Corinthians 1:10)»

And then Paul asks them:

«“Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you?”

(1 Corinthians 1:13)»

In other words, I imagine Paul saying:

“Please, brothers and sisters, live in harmony!

Why is it so important who baptized you?

Why is it so important who has the greater gift?

Are we not all brothers and sisters in Christ?”

There was another problem in Corinth: spiritual gifts.

Some people were proud of the gifts they had received from the Holy Spirit. But Paul reminds them that spiritual gifts are not given for our own pride. They are given for the good of the community.

He says:

«“To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.”

(1 Corinthians 12:7)»

This is why Paul says that speaking in tongues is not enough. If someone can interpret what is spoken so that the whole community can understand and grow, that gift becomes even more valuable.

Paul says:

«“The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be built up.”

(1 Corinthians 14:5)»

The standard is very simple.

The question is not, “How special am I?”

The question is, “How can the gift God has given me help others?”

And then Paul gives us a beautiful image.

«“The body is not a single part, but many.”

(1 Corinthians 12:14)»

The eye cannot say to the hand, “I do not need you.”

And the head cannot say to the feet, “I do not need you.”

Every part is different, but together they form one body.

Perhaps the sky is like that too.

There is the sun.

There are clouds.

There is rain.

There is the moon.

They are all different, but together they make the sky beautiful.

And we are the same.

So, dear children of God,

we are God’s sun, God’s clouds, God’s rain, and God’s moon.

We do not have to be the same, because God created us differently.

But let us remember one thing:

«“You are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it.”

(1 Corinthians 12:27)»

So let us not compete over our differences.

Let us not compare our gifts.

Instead, let us use what God has given us to care for one another.

And just like the beautiful sky God has created, may we become a community that is more beautiful because we are different, yet live together in harmony.

Let us care for one another and live joyfully together as brothers and sisters in Christ.

Amen.
