성 아우구스티노 기념일 – 레오 14세 교황과 ‘다리를 놓는 교회’

오늘은 성 아우구스티노 주교 학자를 기념하는 날입니다.

그래서 오늘은 성 아우구스티노의 영성을 이어 살아가고 있는 한 분, 바로 우리 교회의 목자이신 레오 14세 교황님 이야기를 잠시 나누고 싶습니다.

레오 14세 교황님께서는 교회 역사에서 아주 특별한 두 가지 기록을 가지고 계십니다.

첫째, 가톨릭교회 역사상 최초의 미국 출신 교황님이십니다.

그리고 둘째, 교회 역사상 최초의 아우구스티노 수도회 출신 교황님이십니다.

교황님께서는 선출되신 날, 성 베드로 대성당 발코니에서 자신을 이렇게 소개하셨습니다.

“저는 아우구스티노 수도회원이며, 성 아우구스티노의 아들입니다.”

그런데 여러분, 우리에게는 한 가지 더 재미있고 반가운 사실이 있습니다.

레오 14세 교황님은 바로 이 뉴올리언스와도 특별한 인연이 있습니다.

교황님은 시카고에서 태어나셨지만, 교황님의 외가 뿌리는 뉴올리언스에 있습니다.

교황님의 외조부모는 뉴올리언스 7th Ward의 Creole 가정 출신이었고, 교황님의 증조모는 우리가 잘 알고 있는 French Quarter의 St. Louis Cathedral에서 세례를 받았습니다.

그러니 로마에 계신 교황님이지만, 우리 뉴올리언스 사람들에게는 왠지 조금 더 가깝게 느껴지는 교황님이기도 합니다.

성 아우구스티노는 『고백록』에서 유명한 고백을 남깁니다.

“주님, 저희 마음은 당신 안에서 쉬기까지 평온하지 않습니다.”

우리는 살아가면서 많은 것을 찾습니다.

성공도 찾고, 인정도 찾고, 편안함도 찾습니다.

그러나 아우구스티노는 자신의 긴 방황 끝에 한 가지를 깨달았습니다.

사람의 마음을 마지막까지 채워 주실 수 있는 분은 하느님뿐이라는 것입니다.

레오 14세 교황님의 삶에서도 저는 그 영성을 발견합니다.

교황님께서는 오랜 세월 페루에서 선교사로 살았고, 가난한 지역의 본당을 돌보았으며, 이후에는 그곳에서 주교로 봉사하셨습니다.

그리고 교황님께서는 교황으로서 세상에 처음 인사하시면서 교회가 다리를 놓고, 대화하며, 모든 사람을 받아들이는 교회가 되어야 한다고 말씀하셨습니다.

벽을 만드는 것이 아니라 다리를 놓는 교회,

사람을 판단하기보다 받아들이는 교회,

멀어진 사람에게 먼저 다가가는 교회입니다.

저는 이것이 오늘 우리에게 주시는 성 아우구스티노의 가르침이기도 하다고 생각합니다.

하느님 안에서 참된 평화를 찾은 사람은

그 평화를 혼자 간직하지 않습니다.

내가 있는 자리에서 누군가와 누군가를 이어 주는 작은 다리가 됩니다.

오늘 하루 우리도 한번 생각해 보면 좋겠습니다.

나는 누군가에게 벽이 되고 있는가,

아니면 다리가 되고 있는가?

우리도 성 아우구스티노처럼 하느님 안에서 참된 평화를 찾고,

레오 14세 교황님처럼 우리가 살아가는 바로 이 자리에서

사람과 사람을 이어 주고,

상처 입은 사람에게 먼저 다가가는

사랑의 다리가 될 수 있기를 기도합니다.

그리고 오늘 특별히 성 아우구스티노의 전구를 청하며,

그의 영적인 아들이자, 어쩌면 우리 뉴올리언스와도 작은 가족의 인연을 가진

레오 14세 교황님을 위해 함께 기도합시다.

Memorial of Saint Augustine – Building Bridges

Praise be Jesus Christ.

Today we celebrate the Memorial of Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church.

So today, I would like to share a little about someone who continues the spirituality of Saint Augustine in a very special way: our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV.

Pope Leo has two special places in the history of the Church.

First, he is the first pope from the United States.

Second, he is the first pope from the Order of Saint Augustine.

When Pope Leo was elected and appeared on the balcony of Saint Peter’s Basilica, he introduced himself with these beautiful words:

“I am a son of Saint Augustine, an Augustinian.”

But there is something else that is especially interesting for us here in Louisiana.

Pope Leo also has a special connection to New Orleans.

He was born in Chicago, but his family roots on his mother’s side are here in New Orleans.

His maternal grandparents came from a Creole family in the Seventh Ward of New Orleans, and his great-grandmother was baptized at Saint Louis Cathedral in the French Quarter.

So even though our Holy Father lives far away in Rome, perhaps here in New Orleans, we can feel a little special connection with him.

Saint Augustine once wrote one of his most famous prayers:

“Our hearts are restless until they rest in You, O Lord.”

We spend our lives searching for many things.

We search for success.
We search for recognition.
We search for comfort and security.

But after many years of searching, Augustine discovered something very simple:

Only God can truly fill the human heart.

And I think we can see something of this spirituality in the life of Pope Leo.

For many years, he served as a missionary in Peru.
He lived among the people, listened to their struggles, and later served them as their bishop.

Perhaps this is why, in his first greeting as Pope, he gave the Church a beautiful image.

He said that we should be a Church that builds bridges, encourages dialogue, and welcomes everyone.

Not a Church that builds walls,
but a Church that builds bridges.

Not a Church that pushes people away,
but a Church that brings people together.

And I think this is also a beautiful message from Saint Augustine for us today.

When we find true peace in God,
we do not keep that peace only for ourselves.

We become a small bridge for someone else.

So today, perhaps we can ask ourselves one simple question:

Am I building a wall,
or am I building a bridge?

May Saint Augustine help us to find our true peace in God.

And may we, following the example of Pope Leo XIV, become bridges of love wherever God has placed us—

bringing people together,
welcoming those who feel alone,
and bringing the peace of Christ to others.

And today, through the intercession of Saint Augustine, let us also pray in a special way for his spiritual son, our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV.
