복되신 동정 마리아 모후 기념일 강론

오늘 우리는 복되신 동정 마리아 모후 기념일을 지냅니다.

지난 8월 15일, 우리는 성모 승천 대축일을 지냈습니다.

그리고 그로부터 여드레째 되는 오늘, 교회는 하늘에 오르신 성모님을 ‘모후’, 곧 여왕이라고 부릅니다.

그런데 가만히 생각해 보면 조금 이상합니다.

성모님께서는 평생 한 번도

여왕이 되려고 하신 적이 없었습니다.

왕관을 원하신 적도 없었고,

높은 자리를 찾으신 적도 없었습니다.

오히려 성모님께서 자신을 부르신 말은 이것이었습니다.

“보십시오, 저는 주님의 종입니다.”

성모님께서 원하신 것은 왕관이 아니라

하느님의 뜻이었습니다.

그리고 어쩌면 이것이

성모님께서 마침내 왕관을 받으신 이유인지도 모릅니다.

세상은 높은 곳으로 올라가는 사람에게 왕관을 줍니다.

그러나 하느님께서는 자신을 낮추는 사람을 높이십니다.

성모님께서는 예수님의 가장 가까운 곳에 계셨지만

언제나 한 걸음 뒤에 서 계셨습니다.

베들레헴에서도,

카나에서도,

십자가 아래에서도

성모님께서는 자신을 드러내기보다

예수님을 바라보셨습니다.

그래서 성모님의 왕관은

권력의 왕관이 아니라 사랑의 왕관이고,

영광을 차지한 사람의 왕관이 아니라

자신을 내어준 사람이 받는 왕관입니다.

우리의 신앙생활도 마찬가지인 것 같습니다.

우리가 하느님께 가까이 갈수록

더 중요한 사람이 되는 것이 아니라

오히려 더 작은 사람이 되어야 합니다.

내 뜻보다 하느님의 뜻을 먼저 생각하고,

내가 드러나는 것보다 예수님께서 드러나시도록 살아가는 것.

그것이 성모님께서 걸으신 길입니다.

오늘 모후이신 성모님을 바라보면서

우리도 왕관을 바라보기보다

성모님처럼 이렇게 기도했으면 좋겠습니다.

“주님, 제가 높은 사람이 되게 하지 마시고,

당신의 뜻을 충실히 살아가는 사람이 되게 해주십시오.”

그러면 언젠가 우리도 알게 될 것입니다.

하느님 나라에서 가장 높은 자리는

어쩌면 가장 낮은 곳에서

사랑했던 사람의 자리라는 것을 말입니다.

Homily for the Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today we celebrate the Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Last week, on August 15, we celebrated the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
And today, eight days later, the Church honors Mary, who was taken into heaven, as Queen.

But if we think about it, there is something interesting about this.

Mary never tried to become a queen.

She never asked for a crown.
She never looked for a position of honor.

Instead, this is how Mary described herself:

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.”

What Mary desired was not a crown,
but the will of God.

And perhaps this is precisely why, in the end, she received a crown.

The world gives crowns to those who rise to the top.
But God lifts up those who humble themselves.

Mary was closer to Jesus than anyone else,
and yet she always remained quietly in the background.

In Bethlehem,
at Cana,
and beneath the Cross,
Mary did not try to draw attention to herself.
She simply kept her eyes on Jesus.

That is why Mary’s crown is not a crown of power,
but a crown of love.

It is not the crown of someone who sought glory,
but the crown of someone who gave herself completely.

Our life of faith is much the same.

The closer we come to God,
the goal is not to become more important.
Rather, we are called to become smaller.

To seek God’s will before our own,
and to live so that Jesus may be seen rather than ourselves—

this is the path that Mary walked.

Today, as we look to Mary our Queen,
perhaps instead of asking for a crown,
we can pray as she did:

“Lord, do not make me someone important.
Make me someone who faithfully lives according to your will.”

And one day, perhaps we too will discover this:

In the Kingdom of God,
the highest place may belong
to the one who loved
from the lowest place.
