Sisters, //

Today, as we celebrate the memorial of Saint Pius the Tenth, /

I would like to share something / a little personal with you. //

When I look back on my life, /

I realize that I did not grow up / in a particularly strong Catholic family. //

Most of my relatives / were either Buddhist or Protestant. /

My mother was baptized when she was over 20/

and my father began going to church / after he married my mother. //

And as for me, / when I was young, /

I did not go to church / because I knew Jesus very well. //

Actually, / I went because I liked meeting my friends there. //

That was about it. //

But the priests and sisters in my parish / often said to me, /

“Maybe you should become a priest.” //

Eventually, / they sent me on a retreat. /

And during that retreat, / for the first time, /

I felt something in my heart. //

I felt that perhaps / the Lord was calling me. //

So / I entered the seminary. //

My parents were not very happy about it / at first. /

There had never been a priest or religious in our family, /

and they thought / this would be a very difficult life for me. //

Even after I entered the seminary, /

and even after I returned from military service, /

they still hoped / that I might leave. //

Of course, / now they are very happy / that I am a priest. //

[smile]

But the reason I tell you this long story / is this: //

I entered the seminary / without really knowing Jesus very well. //

And yet, / there was one thing in the seminary / that I loved from the beginning. //

The Liturgy of the Hours. //

At certain times every day, /

we gathered together / and prayed the same Psalms. //

And I still remember / the feeling I had / when I prayed them. //

As we prayed one verse / and responded with another, /

I sometimes felt very strongly /

that the angels were praying and responding with us. //

It was as if our small chapel /

was connected to a much greater prayer /

taking place in heaven. //

And as the years passed, /

I noticed something else. //

The most difficult times in my seminary life /

were often the times /

when I was not faithful / to this daily prayer. //

When I was faithful to it, /

even when life was difficult, /

somehow / I could continue. //

So I began to believe /

that the prayer I offered every day /

was also the prayer that was protecting me every day. //

That is why / I am especially grateful /

for Saint Pius the Tenth today. //

He treasured the Psalms /

and worked to renew / the prayer of the Church. //

And in today's Office of Readings, /

we hear a passage from his apostolic constitution, /

Divino afflatu. //

There he calls our attention /

to the words of Saint Augustine: //

“God praised himself /

so that man might give him fitting praise.” //

What a beautiful thought. //

When we pray the Psalms, /

we do not have to invent / beautiful words for God. //

God has already given us the words. //

And Saint Athanasius says /

that the Psalms are like a mirror. //

In them, /

we can see ourselves /

and the movements of our own hearts. //

There is joy there. /

There is sadness. /

There is fear, / loneliness, / thanksgiving, / suffering, /

and hope. //

Everything that is in our hearts /

is already there. //

Sisters, /

you have prayed these Psalms / thousands of times. //

Perhaps sometimes / they feel beautiful. /

Perhaps sometimes / they feel repetitive. /

And perhaps sometimes /

we are simply tired. //

But I have come to believe this: //

Even when I do not feel that I am praying, /

the prayer of the Church / is carrying me. //

Maybe that is why /

I felt the angels praying with us /

when I was a young seminarian. //

Because the Liturgy of the Hours /

is never only my prayer. //

It is the prayer / of the whole Church. /

It is the prayer / of the saints. /

And somehow, /

it is already a participation /

in the praise of heaven. //

So today, /

on the memorial of Saint Pius the Tenth, /

I simply want to thank God /

for this gift. //

The Psalms that I first learned to love /

in the seminary /

have accompanied me / all these years. //

And I believe /

that this daily prayer /

has quietly protected my vocation /

and brought me closer to Jesus— //

the Jesus /

whom I hardly knew /

when I first entered the seminary. //

May Saint Pius the Tenth /

help all of us /

to remain faithful /

to this prayer of the Church. //

And especially /

on the days when prayer feels difficult, /

may we remember: //

We are never praying alone. //

Amen.
