오늘 복음에서 예수님께서는 하느님 나라를 혼인 잔치에 비유하십니다.

임금은 잔치를 준비하고 사람들을 초대합니다.

그런데 처음 초대받은 사람들은 그 초대를 무시합니다.

그러자 임금은 종들에게 말합니다.

“길에 나가서 만나는 사람을 모두 데려오너라.”

그래서 정말 많은 사람들이 잔치에 들어옵니다.

그런데 임금이 한 사람을 보고 묻습니다.

“친구여, 그대는 혼인 예복도 갖추지 않고 어떻게 여기 들어왔나?”

수녀님들은 아마 아침마다

“오늘 뭐 입지?”

이런 고민은 별로 하지 않으실 것 같습니다.

ㅎㅎㅎ

수도복은 거의 같으니까요.

그런데 저는 옷이 많습니다.

미사 때 입는 옷도 있고,

평상복도 있고,

운동복도 있습니다.

그런데 오늘 복음을 읽으면서 이런 생각이 들었습니다.

“내 옷장에는 옷이 많은데,

하느님 나라에 입고 갈 옷은 준비되어 있는가?”

물론 예수님께서 말씀하시는 예복은

겉으로 입는 옷이 아닐 것입니다.

사랑의 옷,

용서의 옷,

인내의 옷,

겸손의 옷입니다.

그래서 수녀님들의 수도복은 매일 같아도,

우리 마음의 옷은 매일 새롭게 입어야 합니다.

저는 꽃과 나무를 좋아합니다.

그리고 특별히 나비를 참 좋아합니다.

신학교에 있을 때

뒤에 건달산이라는 산이 있었습니다.

저는 거의 매일 그 산에 올라갔는데,

그곳에서 예쁜 나비들을 자주 만났습니다.

나비를 자세히 보고 싶어서 가까이 다가가면

항상 다른 곳으로 날아가 버렸습니다.

또 따라가면 또 날아갔습니다.

ㅎㅎㅎ

그러다가 어느 날 이런 생각을 했습니다.

“나비를 잡으려고 하면 날아가는구나.”

그러면 나비를 쫓아다닐 것이 아니라,

나비가 찾아올 수 있도록

꽃을 심고 아름다운 정원을 만들면 되겠구나.

저는 우리의 신앙도 비슷하다고 생각합니다.

하느님을 억지로 붙잡으려고 하기보다,

하느님께서 찾아오실 수 있도록

우리의 마음을 준비하는 것입니다.

사랑을 심고,

용서를 심고,

인내를 심고,

겸손을 심는 것입니다.

어쩌면 그것이 오늘 복음에서 예수님께서 말씀하시는

혼인 예복인지도 모르겠습니다.

하느님께서는 이미 우리를 당신의 잔치에 초대하셨습니다.

이제 우리가 할 일은

그분을 맞이할 마음을 준비하는 것입니다.

수도복은 매일 같아도,

우리 마음의 옷은 매일 새롭게 입고,

우리 마음의 정원에는 매일 작은 꽃 하나를 심는 것.

그래서 아름다운 나비가 정원을 찾아오듯이,

하느님께서도 기쁘게 찾아오셔서 머무실 수 있는

그런 마음을 만들어 가면 좋겠습니다.

In today’s Gospel,

Jesus compares the Kingdom of Heaven

to a wedding banquet.

The king prepares a great banquet

and invites many people.

But the people who were invited first

ignore his invitation.

So the king tells his servants,

“Go out into the streets

and invite everyone you find.”

And many people come to the banquet.

But then, the king sees one man

and asks him,

“My friend,

how is it that you came in here

without a wedding garment?”

As I reflected on this Gospel,

I started thinking about clothes.

Sisters,

I don’t think you have to worry very much every morning,

“What should I wear today?”

Your habit is almost always the same.

So maybe that is

one less problem in your life. 😄

But I have many clothes.

I have clothes for Mass,

casual clothes,

and clothes for exercise.

And while reading today’s Gospel,

I asked myself:

“I have so many clothes in my closet,

but do I have the right clothes

for the Kingdom of God?”

Of course, Jesus is not talking about

the clothes we wear on the outside.

He is talking about

the clothes of our heart:

love,

forgiveness,

patience,

and humility.

So, Sisters,

even though your habit may be the same every day,

the clothes of our heart

must be new every day.

I love flowers and trees.

And I especially love butterflies.

When I was in the seminary,

there was a mountain behind our seminary

called Geondalsan.

I climbed that mountain almost every day.

And there,

I often saw beautiful butterflies.

Whenever I saw one,

I wanted to get a closer look.

So I would walk toward it.

But every time I got close,

it flew away.

I followed it again,

and it flew away again. 😄

Then one day,

I realized something very simple.

“If I keep trying to catch the butterfly,

it will keep flying away.”

So I thought,

instead of chasing butterflies,

I should plant flowers

and make a beautiful garden

where butterflies will want to come.

I think our spiritual life

is sometimes like that.

Instead of trying so hard to catch God,

perhaps we should prepare our hearts

so that God can come and stay.

We plant love.

We plant forgiveness.

We plant patience.

We plant humility.

Perhaps this is the wedding garment

Jesus is speaking about

in today’s Gospel.

God has already invited us

to His banquet.

Now our part is

to prepare our hearts

to welcome Him.

Our clothes may be the same every day,

but let us put on a new heart every day

and plant one small flower

in the garden of our hearts.

Then, just as a beautiful butterfly

comes quietly into a garden,

may God come into our hearts

and find there

a beautiful place to stay.
