주제 : 오늘 삶 안에서 일하고 계시는 당신을 볼 수 있는 눈을 주소서
오늘 첫째 독서를 읽으면서 한 철학자의 유명한 말이 떠올랐습니다.
헤겔은 이렇게 말했습니다.
“미네르바의 부엉이는 황혼이 깃들 무렵에야 날기 시작한다.”(헤겔 법철학 1820)
조금 어려운 말처럼 들리지만 뜻은 단순합니다.
우리는 대개 모든 일이 지나간 다음에야 그 의미를 깨닫는다는 것입니다.
시간이 지나고 나서야
“아, 그때 그 사람이 참 고마운 사람이었구나.”
“그때 내가 조금 더 잘했어야 했는데.”
“그 일이 결국 나에게 은총이었구나.”
하고 깨닫습니다.
우리의 지혜는 때때로 너무 늦게 찾아옵니다.
그래서 미네르바의 부엉이는 대낮이 아니라 황혼에 날기 시작합니다.
그런데 오늘 에제키엘서에서 하느님께서는 아주 흥미로운 말씀을 하십니다.
"너는 짐을 유배 짐처럼 싸서 대낮에 그들이 보는 앞에서 내어놓았다가,
저녁에 그들이 보는 앞에서 유배를 떠나듯이 떠나라. (에제 12.4-5)"
그들이 보는 앞에서 벽을 뚫고 나가라.
왜 하느님께서는 이렇게까지 ‘보는 앞에서’, 그리고 ‘대낮에’ 하라고 하셨을까요?
오늘 독서의 처음에 그 이유가 나옵니다.
“사람의 아들아, 너는 반항의 집안 한가운데에서 살고 있다. 그들은 볼 눈이 있어도 보지 않고, 들을 귀가 있어도 듣지 않는다.
그들이 반항의 집안이기 때문이다.(에제 12.2)"
하느님께서 숨어 계신 것이 아닙니다.
어쩌면 하느님께서는 이미 대낮에 우리 앞에서 일하고 계십니다.
그런데 우리가 보지 못하는 것입니다.
우리는 흔히 모든 일이 지나간 다음에 하느님을 발견합니다.
“그때 하느님께서 나를 이끌고 계셨구나.”
“그 만남에도 이유가 있었구나.”
“그 어려움 속에서도 하느님께서 함께 계셨구나.”
물론 그것도 아름다운 신앙입니다.
하지만 오늘 복음 말씀은 우리에게 한 걸음 더 나아가라고 초대하는 것 같습니다.
모든 것이 끝난 뒤에 하느님을 발견하는 것만이 아니라,
지금 이 순간 하느님께서 무엇을 하고 계시는지를 바라보라는 것입니다.
그리고 오늘 복음은 그 ‘지금’을 아주 구체적으로 보여 줍니다.
베드로가 예수님께 묻습니다.
“주님, 제 형제가 저에게 죄를 지으면 몇 번이나 용서해야 합니까? 일곱 번까지 해야 합니까?(마태 18,21)”
예수님께서는 말씀하십니다.
“일곱 번이 아니라 일흔일곱 번까지 라도 용서해야 한다.(마태 18,22)”
그리고 큰 빚을 탕감 받았지만 자기 동료의 작은 빚은 용서하지 못한 종의 이야기를 들려주십니다.
그 종에게도 한순간이 있었습니다.
자신이 엄청난 빚을 용서받고 밖으로 나왔을 때,
자기에게 작은 빚을 진 동료를 만났습니다.
그리고 외칩니다. "당장 돈을 내놔!(마태 18,28)"
바로 그에게는 그 순간이 그의 ‘대낮’이 었습니다.
자신이 받은 자비를 기억하고
그 자비를 다른 사람에게 베풀 수 있는 순간이었습니다.
그러나 그는 그 순간을 놓쳤습니다.
우리도 비슷할 때가 많습니다.
사람이 떠난 뒤에 사랑했다고 깨닫고,
관계가 멀어진 뒤에 용서할 걸 하고 후회하고,
기회가 지나간 뒤에 감사할 걸 하고 생각합니다.
그러나 예수님께서는 오늘 우리에게 말씀하시는 것 같습니다.
황혼까지 기다리지 마라.
오늘 사랑하여라.
오늘 감사하여라.
오늘 용서하여라.
하느님의 일은 먼 미래에만 이루어지는 것이 아닙니다.
오늘 내가 만나는 사람 안에서,
오늘 내가 해야 하는 작은 일 안에서,
오늘 나를 힘들게 하는 사람 안에서도
하느님께서는 일하고 계십니다.
미네르바의 부엉이는 황혼에 날기 시작합니다.
그러나 그리스도인은 모든 것이 끝난 뒤에야 하느님을 찾는 사람만은 아닙니다.
우리는 대낮에 하느님을 발견하도록 부름받은 사람들입니다.
대낮에 하느님을 발견하고,
대낮에 감사하고,
대낮에 사랑하고,
그리고 대낮에 용서하는 사람들입니다.
오늘 하루를 시작하면서 이렇게 기도하면 좋겠습니다.
“주님, 모든 일이 지나간 뒤에야 당신을 알아보지 않게 하소서.
오늘 제 삶 안에서 일하고 계시는 당신을 볼 수 있는 눈을 주소서.”
아멘.
Finding God in Broad Daylight
As I was reading today’s first reading, I was reminded of a famous saying by the philosopher Hegel.
He once wrote:
“The owl of Minerva begins its flight only with the falling of dusk. (Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts) Hegel 1820”
It may sound a little difficult, but the meaning is actually quite simple.
Very often, we understand the meaning of things only after they have already passed.
Only later do we realize,
“Ah, that person was such a blessing in my life.”
“I wish I had treated that person a little better.”
“Now I see that even that difficult experience was a grace.”
Sometimes, wisdom comes to us too late.
That is why the owl of Minerva does not fly in broad daylight.
It begins its flight only at dusk.
But in today’s reading from the Book of Ezekiel, God says something very interesting.
“During the day, while they are looking on, bring out your baggage like an exile’s baggage...
Then in the evening, while they are looking on, go out like someone going into exile.”(Ezekiel 12:4)And God tells Ezekiel to break through the wall while they are watching him.
Why does God emphasize this again and again?
Why does He say, “while they are watching”?
And why must Ezekiel do it in broad daylight?
The reason appears at the beginning of today’s reading:
“Son of man, you live in the midst of a rebellious house;
they have eyes to see but do not see, and ears to hear but do not hear.” (Ezekiel 12:2)
God is not hiding from them.
Perhaps God is already working right in front of them, in broad daylight.
The problem is that they cannot see.
And sometimes, we are the same.
Very often, we discover God only after everything is over.
We say,
“Now I understand. God was leading me even then.”
“There was a reason why I met that person.”
“Even in that difficult time, God was with me.”
And of course, that is also a beautiful kind of faith.
But today’s Gospel seems to invite us to go one step further.
Instead of discovering God only after everything has passed,
perhaps we are being invited to ask:
What is God doing in my life right now?
And today’s Gospel shows us very clearly what that “right now” can look like.
Peter comes to Jesus and asks:
“Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him?
As many as seven times?” (Matthew 18:21)Jesus answers:
“I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.” (Matthew 18:22)
Then Jesus tells the story of a servant who had an enormous debt forgiven by his master.
But when that servant went outside and met a fellow servant who owed him only a small amount, he refused to forgive him.
He grabbed him and demanded:
“Pay back what you owe!” (cf. Matthew 18:28)
That moment was his broad daylight.
He had just received tremendous mercy.
And now, standing right in front of him, was an opportunity to remember that mercy and give the same mercy to someone else.
But he missed the moment.
And we often do the same.
Sometimes we realize that we loved someone only after that person has gone.
We think, “I should have forgiven,” only after the relationship has already become distant.
We think, “I should have said thank you,” only after the opportunity has passed.
But today, Jesus seems to say to us:
Do not wait until dusk.
Love today.
Give thanks today.
Forgive today.
God’s work does not happen only somewhere in the distant future.
God is working in the person I meet today,
in the small task I have to do today,
and even in the person who makes my life difficult today.
The owl of Minerva begins its flight at dusk.
But Christians are not called to be people who recognize God only after everything is over.
We are called to discover God in broad daylight.
To recognize God in broad daylight.
To give thanks in broad daylight.
To love in broad daylight.
And to forgive in broad daylight.
So as we begin this day, perhaps we can pray:
“Lord, do not let me recognize You only after everything has passed.
Give me eyes to see You working in my life today.”
